The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main church of Florence and it represents the most famous touristic spot of Tuscany. Nobody in Florence uses to call it with this name, everybody refers to it with the word Duomo.
It was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio and completed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1496. The facade of the Duomo is full of polychrome marble panels in various shades of green, white and pink.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. The three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Florence that covers almost the entire centre of the city.
It is the largest brick dome ever built and the chapel is the bigger one in the world.
During its long history, this cathedral has been the location of the Council of Florence, the spot where Girolamo Savonarola screamed his speeches and where Giuliano di Piero de’ Medici is been murdered on1478 in the Pazzi conspiracy.
The ticket admits the holder to all the monuments in the Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore: Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry of San Giovanni, the Crypt of Santa Reparata inside Florence Cathedral, and the Historical Museum.
